Olympic swimming Gold medallist and MBE, James Guy joins Allan on the podcast today. He’s here to tell his incredible life story, diversifying into coaching, and why having a competitive outlook from a young age set him up for success. James has achieved at the top level of his field and the advice he has to share can be taken by anyone and implemented in their own lives.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • At the Rio Olympics in 2016, James won silver in the 4x200m freestyle relay and a further silver in the 4x100m medley relay. He came fourth in the individual 200m freestyle event.
  • At the Tokyo Olympics, James swam the second leg in the final of the men's 4 × 200 metre freestyle relay, and won his first Olympic gold in a time of 6:58.58 seconds. He then won a second gold, swimming the butterfly leg in the mixed 4 × 100 metre medley relay, and set a world record time of 3:37.58 seconds.
  • James was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2022 New Year Honours for services to swimming.
  • James’ drive to succeed was helped by advice he was given by his father, if you want to be the best in the world then you have to be the best trainer in the world. He never allowed himself to have a bad session or an off day in training, it was always 100% effort as a minimum.
  • A great message to any young sports people out there is that your sporting career won’t last forever, so investing time and effort in your education is still vital. James had such a busy workload as a teenager but he had great teachers who he could ask for help and who knew his studying time was limited.
