059. From Overwhelmed to Peaceful: Proven Methods to Calm an Overactive Nervous System

Hello beautiful friends, welcome to another enlightening episode of Mindfully Moody! We're delving into the fascinating world of the overactive nervous system and explore its profound impact on our health and well-being.

You know when you just feel OVERSTIMULATED? Maybe it's after a vacation, a challenging day at work, a conflict with someone, or even a trip to the grocery store. It could be because your nervous system is overactive, meaning you're spending more time in your sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) vs. your parasympathetic nervous system (calm). 

Keeping your nervous system balanced is one of the most effective ways to live an overall more balanced, peaceful, grounded life. We've both struggled with overactive systems throughout our lives and learning strategies to balance has been transformative. 

In this episode we go into into the impact an overactive nervous system can have on everyday life, relationships, and mental health. We explore coping mechanisms, lifestyle modifications, and therapeutic approaches that can help you regain control and find the balance you're seeking!

Some of our favorite ways to get out of an overactive nervous system:

  1. Breath! Your breath is the most incredible tool that you have. Focus on deep diaphragmatic breathing, with your exhale being longer than your inhale. A great tool to use on the go or throughout your day.
  2. Cold exposure! This could be through an ice bath, a cold shower, even putting cold water in a bowl and putting your face in it. Cold exposure is magical and is one of our favorite ways to reset our nervous system and come to a place of peace.
  3. Connection with others! There is so much science around the power of connection, inclusive of physical touch and how it impacts us as humans. Hug your friends, your pets, your significant others! It can be so calming for the nervous system
  4. ASMR! There's a reason it has gone so viral!
  5. Singing/Humming/Chanting! There's a reason it feels so, so good to belt out a song while you're driving in the car! When you're singing, your exhale is naturally longer than your inhale, so it's giving the same effect as deep breathing.
  6. Gratitude! One of the most important things in life.
  7. & so much more!
