"Speak your truth" is a statement we come across relatively often in coaching and personal development. Some believe that telling the truth might hurt people. They think holding back is better so you don't upset them. Therefore, you're a terrible, selfish person if you show up authentically and honestly to express your opinions.
This makes no sense to me at all. Speaking from experience, I have so much more to offer to others when I choose to tell the truth. When I don't, I limit myself to what I can give. And I feel resentful and frustrated if I say yes and give to someone else if what I wanted to do was say no.
I think this is fundamental and holds many people – especially women – back. When we don't say what we want, we'll become resentful and angry towards ourselves and others.
