Greetings and welcome to Episode 6 of the podcast.

As I’m preparing to travel home to Malawi, I was reminded about my first ever trip to Afrika and wanted to share my most memorable moments with you.  I also want to encourage you to reflect on your first trip and think about sharing your memorable moments too.

My very first trip to Afrika was in 1995.  I was a young trade unionist and I went to a trade union conference in South Afrika – the union in South Afrika at the time, was twinned with my UK.

It was an eight-day trip flying from London Heathrow to Durban.  I couldn’t believe I was on the plane going to Afrika, but I was a little annoyed that I had to do the work of the union whilst I was there, because it meant that I couldn’t explore Afrika the way I wanted to – because I had union officers watching me – you know – watching me to see if I would get ‘down’ wid those Afrikans, and taking me to the places they wanted to see – which were very touristy.

I still remember that trip to this day, twenty-three years later, and in particular, some key things about that trip that move me right up until today – and which marked me so much, that I swore that when I made my own trips to Afrika, I would do things differently.

I wanted to share those things with you – so, I take you through my top five memorable moments that happened on my very first trip to Afrika which was to South Afrika, in 1995.

I hope you get something worthwhile from my experiences.  I would love to hear your stories about your first trip to Afrika. Why not consider sharing them on my Facebook or Instagram page. Throughout the podcast, I will be brining you stories of people who have made trips to Afrika.  Look out for those episodes.
