Learning to read involves DECODING (reading the words on the page) and LANGUAGE COMPREHENSION (understanding what the words mean).
The Simple View of Reading states: DECODING x LANGUAGE COMPREHENSION = READING COMPREHENSION.
You can learn more about the Simple View of Reading in this video.
One of the best ways to improve your child's language comprehension skills is by reading out loud to them every day.
Even if your child can read on their own, it's important to continue reading to them since you can read books that are above their independent reading level and increase their language comprehension.
This episode includes my favorite chapter book recommendations, starting with short chapter books with colorful pictures for our youngest learners and moves all the way to more advanced chapter books for our older learners.
I hope you try these books and commit to reading to your child daily! If you do, find me over on Instagram (@littleslovelearningblog) and let me know which ones you loved!
