Fishing.  It’s not on the top of my list of things to do in my spare time.  Hate might be too strong of a word, but, to this point in my life, I definitely haven’t found fishing to be a joyful experience.

I know others who love it.  They invest their time and resources into it.  They enjoy the experience, and, might I sadly add, are quite successful at it.  They catch fish!  I, on the other hand, catch no fish!

After some honest evaluation, I have come up with some reasons why I might not be a good fisherman:

  1. I don’t care much about it.
  2. I don’t know how to do it well.
  3. I don’t know the best places to fish.
  4. I don’t know the effective difference between a real worm, rubber worm, and a dough ball.
  5. I give up too easily.
  6. Few of my friends fish.
  7. And, a biggie for me, the fish don’t want to be caught!

So why track ‘em down?  Why trick ‘em into biting my fake fish snack on a hook?  Just to end up in the hand of someone who at the point of capture holds their ultimate destiny in his hand?

I might be open to fishing if it didn’t all depend on me.  If someone promised to MAKE ME a fisherman.  (Read Mark 1:16-18.)

We begin a new 5-week message series called GO FISH that will explain how God wants to make us fishers of men and women.  Discover how sharing your faith in today’s culture can be a natural, regular part of your daily life.
