Learn English Through Football Podcast: 2018 Festive Football Review

We are just over half way through the 2018-19 Premier League season after a full set of fixtures over the festive season including the big game between league leaders Liverpool and Manchester City. This game, along with a relegation six-pointer between Huddersfield and Burnley, both feature in our predictions competition at the end of the show. We've also got a football-language quiz question connected to relegation, as well as an English for football expression that describes what a striker does when one on one with the keeper. If you'd like the transcript to the show - great for learners and teachers of English - please show your support by becoming a patron (through Patreon) and if you have questions or comments, email us at: [email protected] (Damian=DF, Damon=DB).

Transcript of the show (5th January 2019)

Introduction

DF: You are listening to languagecaster.com's football-language podcast. Hello and a Happy New Year to

everyone and welcome to the podcast for all those who love the beautiful game of football and who want to improve

their English language skills - English through football. My name is Damian and

I am currently in London where the weather is grey and cold - typical winter

weather indeed. Now, wea€ve just finished a busy couple of weeks of festive

football in which teams played four matches in the league, as well as an FA Cup

third-round match. Lots and lots of football.

Now, unfortunately Damon is not with

me today as he is still celebrating New Year in Japan but he will of course be

back in our next show.

Line-up

DF: OK, what do we have on today's show? Well, first up we take a look back at some of the big stories from the football world over the Christmas and New Year period in our good, the bad and the ugly section. After that we have a football-language question which is connected to the relegation battle. We then explain some football language from the week - sit the keeper down, ask a couple of questions from our end of year quizzes before finishing off with our predictions

Good

DF: Right, let's take a look at what has been happening in the football world over the festive or holiday season. It's been a fantastic week, actually month, for Liverpool who won all seven of their games in December to top the table at the end of 2018. The Reds also managed to beat Napoli in the Champions League to maintain a perfect 100% record for the month.
