For many of us, there is constant chatter in our minds about our bodies and how we think our bodies should look. We think if we trash talk ourselves enough, we can bully our bodies into fitting what we perceive to be the social ideal.

Like any relationship, love is always the answer, except the relationship with yourself is the most important one.

Coach Amber Williams joins us in this episode to talk about our bodies and how we can involve God to help us feel the love we want to feel for ourselves while working on our health goals.

Takeaways:

  • The key to weight loss is to just start somewhere.
  • If something - even weight loss - is important to you, it is also important and matters to Heavenly Father and because of that fact, He can help us in our journey by making it a matter of prayer.
  • Overeating does not just cause physical pain but also emotional pain.
  • When we take care of our body, we allow ourselves to hear Heavenly Father in a different way in our lives.
  • In the two great commandments, there is an implied third commandment. We are not just to love God and others but to also love ourselves.
  • God likens our bodies to temples. The way we care for temples made of rock and stone is the same way we should think about treating our bodies. Our bodies deserve our attention and efforts to maintain them and keep them working.
  • We often think that the bullying mindset of how we view our bodies will change when we lose weight, but it doesn’t.
  • Weight loss and taking care of our body is a journey we will be on our entire lives.
  • Taking care of our bodies is a perfect way to get to know ourselves better as well as our Heavenly Father.

Discussion Points:

  1. We have a culture today that feeds into thinness and beauty. Where is the line for you between following the culture and just wanting to have a healthy body?
  2. Why do you think having a healthy body is important to Heavenly Father?
  3. In this last conference President Nelson asked us to look at our lives and see what debris we could possibly clear away. What “debris” could you possibly clear away from your mortal body - and I don’t mean pounds of weight?
