Our modern understanding of temptation is that it is an invitation to do wrong. But the words of the prayer in Scripture actually point to the idea of a test that reveals the truth. Jesus’ prayer acknowledges that the testing we face is not as simple as picking the best choice in a vacuum but that we need God’s help to resist competing messages and follow God’s lead.
