Lake Guntersville was fishing true to form today, with a solid “good” rating according to Solunar Forecast. The major feeding windows lined up from 12:54 AM to 2:54 AM and again from 1:14 PM to 3:14 PM, while the real sweet spots for the after-work crowd hit right before dark, around 8:03 PM to 9:03 PM. Daytime highs flirted with 70 degrees, low around 47, light winds—classic late summer comfort, just enough chill in the morning to hint at fall, but sun still warming the shallows. Sunrise was at 6:28 AM, sunset at 7:48 PM per Time and Date, giving us nearly 13 hours to fish.
Fish activity has stayed consistent with what we expect for early August. Bass are staging up shallow most mornings and evenings, especially on grass edges, humps, and channel swings near Honeycomb Creek and around Goose Pond. Reports coming in all day showed anglers boating largemouth routinely, with many in the 2- to 4-pound range and a few better ones, particularly closer to the Highway 431 causeway. Folks using topwater poppers and walking baits early found action near grass mats, but by mid-morning, moving over to lipless crankbaits and ChatterBaits paid off in the 4- to 6-foot range. Lawless Lures Recoil Bait was a hot ticket, as Bassmaster Official demonstrated recently.
Local crappie action’s definitely picking up too—especially under bridges and docks. Small jigs tipped with minnows have been best, with several limits put together between the Guntersville City Harbor and the causeway pylons. Catfish have been active on cut bait in deeper current below the dam, with a few blue cats over 20 pounds reported.
The water clarity’s been good, and water temps are holding steady, which influenced the bite. No tidal movement to report here—being a reservoir, current depends on TVA flows, and flow was moderate today, helping keep oxygen pumped in those grass beds.
Hot spots? You can’t go wrong pushing up into the back of Seibold Creek at sunrise, throwing a frog or buzzbait through the pads. Goose Pond’s grass lines produced consistent bites all day on green pumpkin plastics. For numbers, try the waters off the state park’s main point using drop shot rigs or small swimbaits.
If you’re bank fishing, docks near Waterfront Grocery or the public fishing pier behind Wyndham Garden Hotel have held crappie and bream as well.
Lure selection for the current conditions: black/blue jigs, chrome or shad-pattern lipless cranks, green pumpkin flukes, white spinnerbaits, and bright topwaters at dawn. For live bait, extra-large shiners or live nightcrawlers are putting fish in the boat, especially for kids working the docks.
