Lake Guntersville locals woke up this Friday, August 15th, to a muggy Alabama morning, wind out of the northwest around 9 km/h, and the thermometer flirting with 30°C—feels a bit warmer, especially when that sun pops over the horizon around 6:10 AM. With a solid chance of a localized shower later, it’s best to get your lines wet early and take advantage of the mild morning.[The Weather Network]

Best bite today lines up right with sun-up till about mid-morning, tapering after 10 AM when the heat starts to stack up. According to Solunar Forecast, we’re smack in a good window for fish activity through mid-morning, so don’t hit snooze if you want a stringer full. Sunrise is at 6:10 AM and sunset rolls in just after 7:38 PM—plenty of daylight to get it done, but the heat will chase most off the water by lunch.

Water temps are cooking—upper 80s to near 90°F on the main lake, and the grass is matted up heavy in the shallows. TVA crews were talking about thick aquatic plant growth this week, and with bluegill pushing into the grass and rip rap, it’s made for textbook bucketmouth conditions. Paul from the Lake Guntersville State Park fishing report said it plainly: the mats are holding the fish.[Instagram TVA/Lake Guntersville]

This week’s haul has been solid—if you’re after largemouth bass, that’s where the action is running hot. Folks working the edge of the matted grass with hollow-body frogs and popping perch, especially that Strike King KVD in Green Pumpkin Gill, are reporting blowups right at first light. You’ll want braid for that—30lb Sufix or similar for horsing them out.[Omnia Fishing]

When the topwater slows, work a Dirty Jigs underspin with a Strike King Rage Swimmer in Electric Shad close to the edge, especially paralleling those grass lines or where the rock meets deeper water. Several anglers nailed 12-15 bass in a single cove this week on that pattern—big time action for a couple hours, and a cool contrast to those slower days. The bigger fish are hugging deeper rocks, with the best quality fish coming from places where the riprap juts out into the channel. Drop a Coffee Tube in Watermelon Gold & Copper flake on fluorocarbon for a more subtle approach—just a slow drag and hold on tight.

If you like chasing crappie or bluegill, stick to shaded docks and creek channel edges, pitching minnows or small jigs. Summer bite is a little tough till we get a break in water temps, but you’ll still put some in the livewell if you’re patient.

Spring Creek Pointe is hopping with boat traffic, but there are good fish in the pads and deeper grass lines just east of there. The Goose Pond area is another reliable spot—grass mats have pushed out, creating ideal ambush points all along the bank, especially on days like today with light wind.

Bring moving baits for a change-up—small chatterbaits or spinnerbaits in shad patterns will get reaction bites as bass push up on bluegill and shad schools. For live bait, big shiners always work if you want a shot at a heavyweight.

So, to recap the hot lures:
- Strike King KVD Popping Perch in Green Pumpkin Gill
- Strike King Rage Swimmer on a Dirty Jig underspin (Electric Shad)
- Coffee Tubes in Watermelon Gold & Copper Flake
- Hollow-body frogs in the thickest mats you can find

Top hotspots this morning: try Spring Creek Pointe for shallow pads and thick eelgrass, or just off Goose Pond for grass line bass and the occasional school of white bass running the flats.
