Guntersville Glut: Bass Bite Boiling in Late Summer Transition

Lake Guntersville is firing on all cylinders this first week of September. We’ve had overnight lows dipping into the upper 50s and daytime temps tapping out at 81°F. Water temps are sitting in that sweet late-summer transition—cool enough to perk up the bass, but warm enough that shad are still balled up across the main lake and above the bridges.

We had a partly cloudy start today, gentle northeast breeze, and just a hint of mist before sunrise, which was right at 6:22 a.m. Sunset’s coming in about 7:08 p.m. Most folks hit the ramps around 6:00 to get in on the early bite. According to the Solunar Forecast, the major feeding window fell from 1:14 to 3:14 this afternoon, with minor flurries around 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and again at dusk.

Fish activity today has been steady, especially for *largemouth bass*—that’s still the star species here. This morning, word at Waterfront was that a couple boats each boated five to ten keepers before 9:00 a.m., topping out with several at 4-plus pounds. Folks running grass edges threw black/blue swim jigs and shad-patterned ChatterBaits and did solid work pulling bass right off the weed lines. Hollow-body frogs in white and natural colors drew big blowups in the mid-lake milfoil, but after sun-up, the bite slid deeper.

Out on the river ledges, it’s been a crankbait and worm show. Crank down to 10-12 feet with a shad or gizzard pattern, or slow-roll a 3/4 oz football jig. Best baits today: black/blue or junebug swim jigs, shad-pattern ChatterBaits, white frogs at dawn, Missile Baits Magic Worms Texas-rigged or on shaky heads, and live shad if you’re targeting stripes.

Couple of hot spots I’d suggest: the grass mats by North Sauty have been consistent, and the riprap around the Guntersville causeway is holding both numbers and quality as that bait stays shallow. For big bites, don’t sleep on Browns Creek boat lanes at first light—the bait’s thick and big girls are wolf-packing through.
