Guntersville Fishing Report 8/22/2025: Crankbaits, Grubs, and Smallmouths Dominate

Guntersville woke up this morning to a crisp sunrise at 6:42, and we’ll have daylight running till 5:15 this evening. We’re under a 13% waxing crescent moon, so expect minor solunar feeding activity between 8:12 and 9:12 AM, and again this evening just after sunset from 8:29 to 9:29 PM. Major feeding times roll through early, with the hotter window from 1:23 to 3:23 AM and again in the afternoon 1:47 to 3:47 PM, according to SolunarForecast.

Weather’s cooperating — an overnight cool front has settled in, and according to local meteorologists, the humidity’s down and the air has that classic late summer feel. Water temps are in the mid-80s, and surface clarity is holding decent in the main lake but getting a little dingy up the creeks after the recent pop-up storms.

Now, let’s talk fish. Folks hitting the main channel have been boating solid numbers of largemouth, with several reports of bass in the 2-3 pound range stacking up on hydrilla edges. Fish are pushing bait, especially where the grass tapers from three to six feet of water. Anglers working mid-depth crankbaits — especially Spro Rockcrawlers in shad patterns — have been putting up impressive numbers; one seasoned local called those baits “fish catching machines” this week.

Don’t overlook soft plastics either. Z-Man GrubZ and TRD CrawZ have flat-out produced this week, both for quantity and especially for those bigger bites. The GrubZ, in 2.5- or 3.5-inch, fished on light Ned heads, is getting inhaled, and folks swear the bite-to-land ratio is ridiculous. The TRD CrawZ has been best fished slow along deeper grass edges or pitched into thick mats — the bass are smashing them, sometimes coming fully out of the water to wipe out a craw sitting on bottom, according to a review yesterday on Discount Tackle.

Smallmouth action on the river stretches above Mink Creek is heating up, too. According to Feelfree US’s Colin Reis, the summer smallmouth bite is “just about the best thing going right now.” Target rocky points and seams where current washes over broken ledge; small profile jerkbaits and spinnerbaits in chartreuse or white are repeat producers.

For numbers, you’re looking at classic late summer mixed bags this week. Several slot-sized bass caught and released, plus a handful of big drummer and the occasional catfish rolling through grass points. Reports from Goose Pond to Town Creek say the deep docks are also giving up some nice crappie if you’re vertical jigging early, especially with walk-the-dog or tiny hair jigs.

Top Guntersville hot spots to try:
- The stretch from Roseberry to Honeycomb – plenty of grass, bait, and bass, especially early.
- Seibold Creek’s submerged humps for numbers — let those grubs tick the grass.
- Town Creek bridge pilings for crappie, plus a surprise bass or two.
- Those aiming for smallmouth, stick to the rocky points above Mink Creek by sunrise.

Baits of choice: Spro Rockcrawlers, Z-Man GrubZ on Ned rigs, and spinnerbaits with a little flash. Live bait is taking a back seat to artificials — the action’s fast, and the fish are keyed in on shad right now.
