#8 - Be A Leader, Not a Boss - Educate, Empower and Reward your Team

Great bosses and leaders make everybody's life better. Being a leader is not about the title. It is about the action. A boss is concerned about the title. They make sure everyone knows they are in charge. A leader does not even want the "boss" title. I know I don't. I kind of cringe every time someone calls me “their boss” or “boss lady”. It's not that I find it disrespectful, but I have cultivated a team where everyone is important to the success of the company. From the "boss" to the brand-new service technician, we are all in this business together and each have a responsibility or "action" that makes our company run the way it does!

Leadership is a skill that you learn and cultivate over a long period of time, and I truly never feel someone arrives at being a leader. Why, you may ask? Because we are always working with new people that require us to pivot and become better. Being a leader is a challenge and you must be proactive in looking at yourself in the mirror and constantly asking "Am I doing what is best for the team or myself?" If the answer is not THE TEAM, you need to change something.

Leadership is a humble position. My goal with any of my company's is simple: To build a team so strong, no one knows who the boss is. Now, if you are a boss who wants all the praise and kudos for your company succeeding, you need to check yourself. I get so emotional every time my guys or my office tells me that they were asked if they were the owner of the company. Every time I hear this, I know that what I am doing is making a difference! And the difference really comes down to three things to get you to this place:

  • Educate your team
  • Empower your team
  • Reward your team

Here is the real deal: When employees and team members feel respected and appreciated, your business will be able to do amazing things. In conducting interviews this week, I cannot even begin to tell you how many people stated those two things in the interviews. They are looking for a place to work where they are not just a number, where they can use their job skills to contribute to building something awesome and feeling respected for what they do accomplish at the job for the company. Ladies, this is NOT HARD! You are the leader of your company and that gives you the ultimate power to implement one or all or more of these things - ANY TIME YOU WANT! There is no corporate bullshit telling you that you can't! Start with one! You will want to add more - I promise you that!

In closing as promised, if you will implement education, empowerment, and rewards into your company, you will not only have a loyal team of employees, but you will see exponential growth in sales. My business is up, not even kidding, 99.2% this year! That is staggering! And guess what, same equipment, same team. I poured my heart and soul into building this team of "Owners" and that is what we have! When "owners" are working with you, they always do what is best for the company - resulting in higher sales and happier customers.
