William Dear is a Canadian-American film and television director, writer, and producer known for his work in family-friendly and adventure films. Born in 1943, he gained prominence with his 1982 sci-fi comedy Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann, which he co-wrote and directed.
Dear is best known for directing the beloved family film Harry and the Hendersons (1987), a comedy about a family that befriends a Sasquatch, which won an Academy Award for Best Makeup. His other notable works include Angels in the Outfield (1994), If Looks Could Kill (1991), and The Perfect Game (2009). He has also directed several television projects, including episodes of Miami Vice, Dinosaurs, and Amazing Stories.
