The co-creator of a ‘big idea’ that is DEVO, Jerry Casale initially envisioned the concept to encompass video, events and much more beyond music. Shaped by his experiences at Kent State, and the trauma of witnessing the killing of his fellow student demonstrator friends, he channeled his creativity into projects that eventually became the pioneering band he is most famous for. In our conversation we talk about that event at Kent State, his artistic ambitions, the formation of the band and how he branched out from DEVO into the world of music videos, commercials and eventually to his own wine brand, 50 by 50, and his musical projects beyond the band.
