"I Don’t Want My Child to Be Well-Behaved — I Want Them to Be Fully Alive"

Let’s talk about what “well-behaved” actually means in our society.

When we say a child is well-behaved, we often mean:

  • They don’t interrupt adults.
  • They sit quietly, even when upset.
  • They say please and thank you, even when they’re uncomfortable.
  • They don’t express anger.
  • They don’t say “No.”
  • They don’t cry loudly.
  • They don’t challenge anything we say.
    Basically, they’re
    quiet, compliant, and convenient.
    But here’s the truth:
When we train our kids to be “well-behaved” by silencing their emotions or discouraging self-expression, we’re not raising peaceful children — we’re raising suppressed children.
