Bethel (Beth - House El - God or House of God) was the location Jacob met with the Lord after he had conspired against his father Isaac, at his mother's instruction, to steal his brother's (Esau) blessing of the first born.   God reveals Himself to Jacob and gives Jacob a glimpse of the plan he was about to embark upon.  Later God calls Jacob back to Bethel to dwell after Jacob returns to the land and his kids cause a lot of grief by attacking the city of Shechem after an incident involving Jacob's daughter and the prince of the city.  For us  this story reminds us to always return to the place where we connected with God and trusted in Him.
