Ghislaine Maxwell and her legal team pleaded with the court for leniency ahead of her sentencing, urging the judge to impose a far lighter term than the government recommended. Her attorneys argued that she was unfairly being treated as a proxy for Jeffrey Epstein, claiming that without his influence, she would never have been involved in such crimes. They highlighted her alleged vulnerability, a troubled personal history, and emphasized that she had already endured difficult conditions while incarcerated. The defense suggested that a sentence of just over four years would be sufficient, painting her as a secondary player rather than the central figure in the abuse network.

Prosecutors, however, countered by calling for a sentence ranging from 30 to 55 years, stressing that Maxwell was an active enabler who groomed and facilitated the abuse of minors. Judge Alison Nathan ultimately imposed a 20-year sentence—far longer than the defense’s request but shorter than what the government had sought. In her remarks, Judge Nathan made clear that the punishment was tailored to Maxwell’s own culpability, noting that she was being sentenced not as a stand-in for Epstein, but for her own deliberate and damaging role in the crimes.
