Jeffrey Epstein almost became the subject of a “To Catch a Predator”–style sting led by Chris Hansen. Around 2014–2015, Hansen and his team began discussions with law enforcement about setting up a hidden-camera operation similar to the ones that exposed online predators. The plan was to lure Epstein into a sting setting and confront him on camera, which, had it gone forward, would have represented one of the most high-profile busts in the show’s history.
But the project never made it past the planning stage. For reasons never fully clarified—whether due to logistical hurdles, lack of official cooperation, or the sheer weight of Epstein’s influence—the sting was shelved. No episode was ever produced, and Hansen’s team moved on to other targets. In hindsight, the abandoned plan highlights how close Epstein came to being publicly exposed in a format that captured national attention, and how his shield of wealth and power helped him slip away from another moment of accountability.
