Israel Launches Major Gaza Strikes Amid Rising Tensions
Iran-U.S. Nuclear Talks Stall Over Enrichment Rights
Yemen Rebels Intercept Israeli Missile Threats Again
The time is now 03:00 AM in New York, I'm Noa Levi and this is the latest Israel Today: Ongoing War Report.
The ongoing conflict across multiple fronts continues to shape the security landscape in Israel and the broader region. Over the past week, Israeli Border Police units have conducted several operations in the West Bank, resulting in the arrest of twenty suspects and the seizure of weapons including rifles, pistols, grenades, and ammunition. Additionally, bomb disposal experts have neutralized twenty-seven explosive devices intended to target security forces, highlighting ongoing threats of terror attacks.
Meanwhile, Israel's military has been active in southern Lebanon, conducting a series of targeted air and ground strikes. These operations, which included over a dozen different attack points, targeted Hezbollah infrastructure and military positions, with some reports indicating the use of aircraft, helicopters, and drones. The timing coincides with upcoming local elections in southern Lebanon, raising concerns about potential political influences behind Israel’s military actions.
In Gaza, Israeli Defense Forces have continued their extensive campaign, striking over seventy-five targets, including launchers, military compounds, and weapons storage sites. The IDF reports killing several terrorists and destroying key infrastructure, emphasizing its commitment to degrading militant capabilities despite ongoing international and regional tensions.
The political climate in Israel remains tense, with a recent poll indicating that a slim majority—51%—supports ongoing military operations in Gaza, while 39% oppose further fighting. Among coalition voters, support for the campaign is even higher, with 87% backing continued military actions. Conversely, opposition voters tend to oppose further military escalation. The same poll notes no significant change in the Knesset’s political balance, with the coalition holding 48 seats and the opposition 62 seats, excluding Arab parties.
In the international arena, renewed nuclear talks between Iran and the United States are scheduled to take place in Rome today. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian stated that fundamental differences remain between Tehran and Washington, particularly regarding Iran's uranium enrichment capabilities. Iran has expressed willingness for increased inspections but insists on retaining its enrichment abilities, complicating diplomatic efforts to curb its nuclear program.
Additionally, regional tensions persist as Houthi rebels in Yemen launched another missile attack towards Israel, intercepted by Israeli missile defenses. This marks the twelfth alert in Israel this month due to missile threats from Yemen, emphasizing the volatile security environment.
On the domestic front, a controversy has arisen involving Columbia University in the United States, where the Office for Civil Rights has found the institution guilty of acting with deliberate indifference toward antisemitic harassment on campus. The university failed to protect Jewish students over a 19-month period, neglecting to investigate vandalism and harassment incidents, including swastikas drawn in classrooms. The findings are part of a broader effort by the US government to combat antisemitism, especially following the Hamas attacks on Israel in October 2023, which have fueled a surge in anti-Jewish discrimination globally.
In other news, Israeli authorities have arrested a suspect in Beersheba who was caught with concealed drugs after attempting to swallow suspected narcotics during a police stop. The suspect, a resident of southern Israel, is now in custody pending further investigation.
