The time is now 12:00 AM in New York, I'm Noa Levi and this is the latest Israel Today: Ongoing War Report.

Today, the Israeli nation faces a complex and evolving security challenge across seven fronts, amid ongoing international and domestic repercussions. Israel continues to confront threats from Iran and its proxies, with military operations intensifying in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. Over the past 19 months, Israel has been engaged in a protracted conflict with Hamas in Gaza, pursuing a dual strategy of limited military offensives coupled with negotiations, currently centered in Doha, aimed at halting hostilities and securing the release of hostages. The Israeli government has also announced plans to take full control of Gaza to prevent Hamas from looting aid, signaling a possible shift towards more decisive military action if negotiations falter.

Within Israel, political tensions remain high. A recent controversy involved a member of the Likud party criticizing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to dismiss Knesset member Amits Lavi from the Foreign and Defense Committee, citing concerns about democratic norms. Meanwhile, international aid to US institutions faces setbacks, as the American Department of Health has canceled $60 million in grants to Harvard University over allegations related to handling antisemitic incidents.

Regionally, Iran’s support for proxies continues to threaten stability. Iran’s influence extends to militias in Iraq and Yemen, complicating Israel’s security calculations. Hezbollah in Lebanon and Syrian armed groups remain active, with sporadic exchanges of fire and intelligence. The Israeli military reports that recent operations in Gaza have been more vigorous, deploying five divisions in a significant escalation, while negotiations seek a ceasefire that could potentially lead to a broader peace process or a decisive military breakthrough.

Israel’s military effort, dubbed Operation Gideon’s Chariots, signals a renewed push against Hamas, with reports indicating the deployment of a substantial number of troops inside Gaza for the first time in months. Prime Minister Netanyahu has emphasized that if negotiations do not meet Israel’s demands, the military will escalate, potentially resulting in full control of Gaza and the cessation of Hamas’s ability to loot aid supplies. Nonetheless, diplomatic efforts remain fragile, with threats from Netanyahu to pull back negotiations if Hamas shows unwillingness to compromise.

Economically, Israel shows resilience; preliminary figures indicate a growth of 3.4% in GDP in the first quarter of 2025, with per capita income rising 2.2%. This counters fears of economic collapse despite the ongoing conflict and the large-scale reserve mobilizations. However, the human toll remains acute. Reservists, who have served extensively in Gaza and the North, face increasing risks as hostilities potentially escalate. The images of young soldiers maimed or killed continue to haunt the national consciousness, amplifying the urgency among families and the broader society.

The plight of hostages held in Gaza adds a profound layer of urgency. Their families endure a personal nightmare, with time perceived as an enemy that threatens their loved ones’ survival. Israeli officials now face a critical choice: continue a cautious, incremental approach balancing military action and diplomacy, or escalate military operations decisively to bring an end to hostilities and secure the release of captives.

Meanwhile, in domestic security, violence persists. Two young men were shot at the Jaffa Port last night, resulting in the death of a 26-year-old. Police have opened an investigation...
