William and Kat dive into Smallpox. Smallpox caused by the variola virus, was one of history's most devastating diseases. Its origins remain uncertain, but evidence suggests it evolved from African rodents thousands of years ago. The disease spread globally through trade, warfare, and colonization, with major outbreaks recorded in ancient Egypt, Asia, and later Europe and the Americas. Smallpox had a high fatality rate, leaving survivors with severe scarring or blindness. Early prevention methods included variolation, later replaced by Edward Jenner’s vaccination in 1796. A global eradication effort, led by the WHO, successfully eliminated smallpox by 1980. However, concerns remain over stored virus samples and potential bioterrorism threats.
