In this episode, Kartikay Mehrotra tells the true story of United States immigration; it's quite a different picture than the one that news channels and politicians paint all too often.

Kartikay Mehrotra is a legal reporter with Bloomberg in San Francisco where he uses litigation as a launching point to write about ranging subjects including internet privacy, climate change, bank fraud and cheating carmakers. For the last two years, he's focused on the economy of immigrant labor and the shadows in which they operate. In 2017, he won awards for his story about the lives and limbs lost by immigrant workers tasked with cleaning America's slaughterhouses while meatpackers posted record profits. In 2018, he tracked down workers who'd escaped ICE raids in California only to find their employers threatening them with deportation in violation of state and federal labor laws. Prior to his current role, Mehrotra covered government, technology and energy as a reporter for Bloomberg in India. Earlier, he wrote about state government and education in Illinois. He holds a bachelor's degree in journalism and English from Northern Illinois University and a Master's degree in public affairs reporting from the University of Illinois-Springfield. He joined Bloomberg in 2010.
