Ruth Ann Tesanovich is a retired Medical Laboratory Scientist from UGA, and has been a resident of Madison County, GA for 36 years. She is also secretary and treasurer of the Madison County Clean Power Coalition Chapter (MCCPC) a chapter of BREDL whose mission is to protect the environment and advocate for the communities polluted by the processing and burning of railroad ties.

Biomass includes wood products, agricultural residues or forest waste, and other highly toxic feed stocks such as construction and demolition waste. And in this instance the burning of railroad ties. Burning these materials as fuel for electricity pollutes the air we breathe.

In a powerful new letter signed by the Allergy & Asthma Network, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Lung Association, American Public Health Association, Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, National Association of County & City Health Officials, National Environmental Health Association, and Physicians for Social Responsibility, the health community’s message is clear:

“Biomass is far from “clean” – burning biomass creates air pollution that causes a sweeping array of health harms, from asthma attacks to cancer to heart attacks, resulting in emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and premature deaths.”

With Ruth Ann we talk about the biomass plant in their county, the environmental and health impacts, community involvement, HB 857 they got passed, and what their plans for the future are.
