Have you ever been on the receiving end of unkind words? It definitely does not feel good. Words have the power of life and death. Research indicates you need five more positive acknowledgments to every one negative criticism. This ratio of five to one is required to maintain a healthy level of self-esteem, trust, and confidence. We at some point or another have said things we shouldn’t, and someone gets hurt in the process. If you are intentional, you can change your habits and tame your tongue. When trying to change a habit, it’s always important to recognize what’s in your own heart because that’s where words originate. There are a few simple steps you can take to create a healthy habit of positive interactions with others. First, when you realize that you’re struggling with the way you speak to someone, ask Holy Spirit to help you figure out the root of those words. Second, the way you treat other people is often a reflection of the way you treat yourself. Ask Holy Spirit to help you operate in grace and kindness. Third, examine how you talk about you and your circumstances because this might reveal an area of your heart or a deep belief that God wants to heal. As you begin taking these steps, you allow and trust God to do a work in your heart. As a result, you develop a healthy habit of kindness and positive language. The way you think, your perspective, the atmosphere around you, your relationships, and all of these things and more will just get better. Remember you get to choose your words. You can choose to leave someone better than you found them! You can choose to be cheerful and life-giving. You, along with Holy Spirit, have the power! Matthew 12:34 You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. Proverbs 18:21 Your words are so powerful that they will kill or give life, and the talkative person will reap the consequences.
