Meet Anne - Mother of 7 year old Henry who was diagnosed with SMA when he was 10 months. We discuss the process of diagnosis and how they support Henry’s treatment and progress while balancing her part time work at a non-profit.
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord and impacts the muscles used for activities such as breathing, eating, crawling, and walking. Before treatment SMA was the #1 genetic killer of infants. As of this last year all 50 states have implemented SMA as part of the newborn screening so now babies are being diagnosed at birth and are being treated even before they have symptoms.
