Summary:
As the country has battled the Great Recession, weve been inundated with reports of corporate layoffs and manufacturing jobs vanishing. But theres another group of American workers that has been particularly hard hit the creative class.
Then, its the first poem about David Bowie to win the Pulitzer Prize. Tracy K. Smiths collection Life on Mars contains many references to the man she salutes as the Pope of Pop. Smith admits she became kind of obsessed with Bowies extraterrestrial alter ego Ziggy Stardust late in her thirties.
After that, the years since 2009 have been good for Michael Jackson impersonators. After the pop star died on the verge of a comeback show, fans have wanted to see the closest thing available. They want to go through me, says impersonator Sean Vezina, to get to him.
Following that, an epic poem written more than 2,000 years ago by a Roman named Lucretius may be one of Western culture's most profound examples of art anticipating scientific discovery and modern thought. The poem is called "On the Nature of Things", and it presents all kinds of radical philosophical and scientific ideas.
And finally, the band Of Montreal is known for its theatrical, over-the-top shows. Frontman Kevin Barnes antics and flamboyant costumes recall the heyday of glam rock. Barnes wasnt a born performer as a teenager, he was a loner, painfully shy. On a family camping trip, his uncle brought along a guitar and taught Barnes how to play Under My Thumb by the Rolling Stones. It was sort of a revelation for me you can learn those simple [chords] pretty quickly, and then the whole world of pop music opens up to you, remembers Barnes. After he learned the Stones catalogue, Barnes started writing his own songs. [Broadcast Date: April 28, 2012]
