This one’s for the coonhound history buffs as Steve talks with his longtime friend Lee Currens and their mutual friend Tommy Lanning. Lee grew up coon hunting along the rugged Kentucky River bluffs of the Bluegrass State. Memories are wonderful treasures and Currens has an extensive mental library stocked with volumes containing some of the best-known legends of our sport, human and canine alike as the leading characters. An example is in Lee’s telling of the night he judged two of coon hunting’s most famous stud dogs in one Grand Nite Champion cast; House’s Chief and Merchant’s Banjo II, handled by legends Joe House and James Merchant. Currens hunted with many of the most famous hounds and hunters from the golden age of coon hunting. He also owned the sire that’s responsible for starting the popular Buck Creek strain of Treeing Walker hounds.
