Vice President Kamala Harris has conceded the 2024 presidential election to former President Donald Trump, but she emphasized that she does not concede the fight for the causes that drove her campaign. In her concession speech delivered at Howard University, her alma mater, Harris urged her supporters not to despair and to continue working towards freedom, opportunity, and fairness. She acknowledged the election results, stressing the importance of a peaceful transition of power and loyalty to the U.S. Constitution. Despite the defeat, Harris encouraged her supporters to remain committed to their cause, working hard and organizing to build a better future. She also reassured young supporters that it is okay to feel upset but emphasized the importance of never giving up.
Harris's campaign faced significant challenges after President Joe Biden exited the race following a disastrous debate performance in June. Harris quickly became the Democratic nominee but struggled to distinguish herself from the unpopular incumbent and had limited time to connect with voters. The election cycle was marked by chaos, including two assassination attempts against Trump and a highly competitive race in key battleground states.
In her speech, Harris contrasted her actions with those of Trump after the 2020 election by accepting the electoral results and committing to a peaceful handover of power. She will now oversee the formal certification of the election results by Congress in her role as vice president and Senate president.
