To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Half-Life 2, which falls on November 16, 2024, NVIDIA has released a new trailer and announced several initiatives. The trailer showcases the upcoming Half-Life 2 RTX, a remastered version of the classic game developed by a 100-person mod team at Orbifold Studios. This remaster includes full ray tracing, remastered assets with significantly increased detail (world textures have 8x the pixels and assets like the suit have 20x the geometric detail of the original), and DLSS 3.5 with Ray Reconstruction. The game is set to be released as a free DLC for Half-Life 2 owners.
NVIDIA is also hosting a giveaway for a custom-wrapped GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER graphics card featuring Gordon Freeman and his iconic crowbar. To enter, fans need to like the post and reply with the #HalfLife2RTX hashtag on X, Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok.
The development of Half-Life 2 RTX leverages NVIDIA's RTX Remix tools, which allow the team to bypass the limitations of the original engine and implement modern AAA workflows, including Physically Based Rendering (PBR) materials, fully ray-traced reflections and refractions, and volumetric fog with dynamic lighting and shadows.
The game is currently available for wishlisting on Steam, but the release date has not been announced.
