How to Prosper with a Clear Conscience

“You shall not steal”, the eighth commandment may sound simple, but it challenges us to reflect deeply on our relationship with possessions and the subtle ways we justify taking what isn’t ours. Theft isn’t limited to break-ins or shoplifting; it shows up in dishonest expenses, workplace shortcuts, tax evasion, and even counterfeit goods, costing society trillions annually and eroding trust. Gone are the days when people slept with their doors open; fear and suspicion now mark our communities. As J. John points out, it often seems like our lives revolve around material gain. But Scripture reminds us that everything belongs to God. When we steal, we declare that what He’s provided isn’t enough. Real transformation comes when we recognize we’re stewards, not owners. Paul calls us to reject dishonesty, work with integrity, and give generously, just like the thief on the cross who found grace the moment he turned to Jesus. Living with honesty, fulfilling promises, tithing, and trusting God’s provision shapes a countercultural life. As Solomon prayed, “Give me neither poverty nor riches, but just enough.” Let that prayer guide your steps and let your faith shine through a life of radical integrity and generosity.
