Once highly scandalous and widely considered ugly, she stands today as an emblem of fashion and of women's self-possession: the one and only Madame X. Her partnership with #johnsingersargent to create the work was full of contention, but the two were proud the results of her portrait... until the Paris Salon of 1884. On this one-painting spotlight episode, we will be discussing women's self-presentation then and now, and what hasn't changed: how much reception of one's "look" matters.
