IBS fast fact. Prebiotics vs probiotics

What's the difference?

Prebiotics and probiotics are not the same thing.

Prebiotics are specific soluble fibers that ferment (slowly or rapidly) in the gut. That fermentation creates an environment of beneficial short chain fatty acids, such as butyrates.

This environment encourages the growth of healthy gut flora including bacteria and yeasts. (And it only encourages the good guys.)

Probiotics are those beneficial live bacteria and yeast strains. (These good guys then keep bad guys in check.)

You can and should get both prebiotics and probiotics in your daily diet, from foods and/or supplements.

But the details really matter here…
