In the post-modern world in which we now live, a rational faith has been jettisoned for mystery and mysticism where metaphor is at the heart of spirituality. The emotional response generated by feelings is at the core of idolatry because it appeals to our physical senses. Fallen man longs to place the focus of his faith on something tangible in the physical realm. The human craving for this will finally be satisfied in the image of the beast, which they fashion with their own hands, comes to life and breathes blasphemy and death.
(A metaphor is a figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things. As a literary device, metaphor creates implicit comparisons without the express use of “like” or “as.” Metaphor is a means of asserting that two things are identical in comparison rather than just similar.
