Purchasing power varies significantly by location, affecting workers' daily lives. A study by Bankrate shows how the cost of living impacts salaries and purchasing power in major U.S. cities. San Francisco has the highest living costs, where a $100,000 salary feels like $79,000 in San Antonio after adjustments. Only four out of 25 large metropolitan areas enable workers to keep more purchasing power than their salaries imply: San Antonio, St. Louis, Charlotte, and Detroit. In San Antonio, the average salary of $57,700 translates to a purchasing power of about $61,580 due to lower living costs. St. Louis's average salary of $61,910 converts to a purchasing power of $64,289. Conversely, cities like Los Angeles, Seattle, New York, and Miami see substantial decreases in purchasing power, with Los Angeles' $73,400 salary dropping to approximately $63,550 in purchasing terms due to high housing and transportation expenses.
