A Google report reveals nearly a 50% increase in greenhouse gas emissions over the past four years, primarily due to AI investments. Google's emissions reached 14.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2023, up 13% from 2022 and 48% since 2019. The rise mainly stems from energy consumption by data centers and the supply chain. Google aims for net zero emissions by 2030, but the growing energy demands of AI complicate this goal. The company expects further emissions growth as it continues investing in AI infrastructure. Despite the challenges, Google highlights AI's potential to reduce overall emissions by 5% to 10% and has introduced various AI-powered products. Microsoft also faces similar challenges, with a 30% rise in emissions from 2020 to 2023.
