Weekly Football Phrase - To be suspended

This week's football phrase is 'to be suspended'. This expression usually means that someone is not allowed to play in a match or something occurs that does not allow the game to go ahead, for example, the game was suspended due to bad weather conditions. Now we mostly use this phrase to explain that a player is unable to play in a match - usually an important one - due to his or her bad behaviour. The player either received a red card in the previous game or has received too many yellow cards and is banned - or suspended from playing. So, for this year's Champions League final, Real Madrid midfielder Xavi Alonso is suspended as he received a second yellow card in the semi-final against Bayern Munich which means that he will not be allowed to play in the final - he is suspended.
