Weekly Football Phrase - On the verge

This week's football phrase is 'on the verge'. This phrase takes the 'be' verb - 'be on the verge' and is followed by the preposition 'of' - to be on the verge of. A verge is the edge, or line, between some grass and a path. It is a border between the two. If you cross the verge you move from the path onto the grass. The phrase to be on the verge of doing something means you have nearly done something, you are close to doing something. In football it is often used to talk about a team that has nearly won something, they are close to winning something but have one more gameA  to go, one more verge or border to cross. This weekend, Atletico Madrid are on the verge of becoming La Liga champions. They just need a draw or a win against Barcelona and they will be crowned champions. On the verge.
