Story Transcript:
Lv: Rīgas centrālā policijas stacija bija pilna ar cilvēkiem, kas steidzīgi pārvietojās.
En: The Rīgas central police station was filled with people moving briskly.
Lv: Cauri aukstajām, pelēkajām sienām varēja dzirdēt zvanus un redzēt papīru kalnus uz galdiem.
En: Through the cold, gray walls, one could hear calls and see mountains of paper on the desks.
Lv: Tas viss kontrastēja ar pavasara ziedu košo krāšņumu ārpusē.
En: All of this contrasted with the bright splendor of spring flowers outside.
Lv: Jānis, mākslas galerijas kurators, sēdēja pie galda un gaidīja savu kārtu tikties ar policiju.
En: Jānis, an art gallery curator, sat at a table, waiting for his turn to meet with the police.
Lv: Ilze, pašpasludināta mākslas eksperte un Jāņa bijusī kolēģe, bija līdzās, cenšoties viņu mierināt.
En: Ilze, a self-proclaimed art expert and Jānis's former colleague, was beside him, trying to comfort him.
Lv: Viņa saprata, ka Jāņa reputācija bija uz spēles.
En: She understood that Jānis's reputation was at stake.
Lv: “Tu to atradīsi,” Ilze sacīja Jānim, “Es tevi pazīstu - tu nepadodies viegli.”
En: “You'll find it,” Ilze said to Jānis, “I know you - you don’t give up easily.”
Lv: “Es ceru, ka tev taisnība,” Jānis atbildēja, acīm redzami satraukts.
En: “I hope you’re right,” Jānis replied, visibly anxious.
Lv: Kopš vērtīgais gleznojums pazuda no izstādes, viņš izjuta spiedienu no visām pusēm.
En: Since the valuable painting disappeared from the exhibition, he felt pressure from all sides.
Lv: Viņa boss bija neizpratnē un kolēģi - aizdomīgi.
En: His boss was baffled, and colleagues were suspicious.
Lv: Jānis pagriezās pret Andri, policijas inspektoru, kurš beidzot viņu uzsauca uz sarunu.
En: Jānis turned to Andris, the police inspector, who finally called him in for a conversation.
Lv: "Jāni, tev ir jāizstāsta viss, ko zini," sacīja Andris, ieinteresēts, tomēr ar zināmu aizdomīgumu balsī.
En: "Jāni, you need to tell us everything you know," said Andris, interested yet with a note of suspicion in his voice.
Lv: "Pirmajā mirklī šķita, ka viss ir kārtībā," Jānis sāka skaidrot.
En: "At first glance, everything seemed fine," Jānis began to explain.
Lv: "Bet, tikko atvēru galeriju, sapratu, ka gleznojuma tur nav.
En: "But as soon as I opened the gallery, I realized the painting wasn’t there.
Lv: Es jau runāju ar apsardzi un administrāciju, taču neviens neko nav manījis."
En: I’ve already talked to security and administration, but no one noticed anything."
Lv: Andris noliecās uz priekšu, klausoties uzmanīgi.
En: Andris leaned forward, listening carefully.
Lv: "Ir kāds, kuru tu uzskati par aizdomīgu?" viņš jautāja.
En: "Is there anyone you consider suspicious?" he asked.
Lv: Jānis ievilka dziļu elpu.
En: Jānis took a deep breath.
Lv: Līdz šim viņa prātā nebija neviena, ko viņš kritiski aplūkotu.
En: Until now, there wasn’t anyone in his mind he viewed critically.
Lv: Taču, kad viņš atgriezās galerijā pēc sarunas ar policiju, viņam pēkšņi uzbīdās atmiņā, ka viņa labākais draugs un gleznu restaurators, Roberts, bija bijis tur biežāk nekā parasti pirms gleznojuma pazušanas.
En: However, when he returned to the gallery after talking with the police, it suddenly dawned on him that his best friend and painting restorer, Roberts, had been there more frequently than...
