Story Transcript:

En: The icy wind had blown through the morning air, and the sun barely shone through the winter clouds over the vast farm in the Wes-Kaap.

En: The fields were quiet, the ground ready to come back to life again in the spring.

En: The wheat that had become so lush in the summer lay dormant, waiting for the arrival of warmer days.

En: Charlize, a curious teenager, climbed into her boots and wrapped her thick woolen scarf tightly around her neck.

En: Her school project on farming techniques had brought her to oom Hendrik's farm.

En: She had heard of his wealth of knowledge and his traditional ways.

En: She decided to spend her school holiday there, hoping she could convince him of a few new sustainable techniques.

Af: Oom Hendrik was 'n kranige boer, bekend vir sy sukses met wisselbou en sy skewe voorskoot wat altyd om sy middel geknoop was.
En: Oom Hendrik was an avid farmer, known for his success with crop rotation and his crooked apron that was always knotted around his waist.

Af: Sy vel was gelooid van jare in die son, en sy hande was sterk soos die pluime van 'n windmeul.
En: His skin was tanned from years in the sun, and his hands were as strong as the blades of a windmill.

En: Although gentle in spirit, courteous and slightly skeptical of any changes, he was glad to have someone who could help him.

En: "What does a young girl know about farming?" Hendrik asked with a half-smile when Charlize arrived at the homestead on the first morning.

En: "I may not know much, Oom Hendrik, but I want to learn," she replied determinedly.

En: The two began working together, and although Hendrik stubbornly clung to his ways, Charlize listened patiently and shared her ideas.

En: She talked about compost heaps and the use of natural pesticides, concepts Hendrik dismissed with a chuckle.

Why waste time when fertilizer works?" he said one morning.
