I wasn't the class clown in school, and I've only been told I should be a comedian once. Back in high school when they voted on those superlatives like best dressed, most athletic, and I'm better than you. My friend Judy said "jan you say funny things, I'm going to nominate you as funniest." And so I got 2 votes. . me and Judy. Even at my class reunion she was the only one who said you're a comedian – that's perfect. Everyone else looked at me like, you haven't been on any major TV shows, are you still living at home with your parents? They never thought of me as a comedian, even though I've been doing it full time for over 26 years and making a great living at it.

This week I'm taking about guidelines for using humor in business, and today's tip is don't wait for permission from others to use some humor, and don't feel like you have to be naturally funny to use it. These go hand in hand. We think if we're not naturally funny, and no one has told us we can use humor, then we shouldn't. Well that is absolutely not true.

Sure there are class clowns and comedians who have been told their whole life that they should get on stage, but the majority of us developed our humor skills. We have learned where to look to find the humor in a situation. And you can too. Humor is a muscle that you need to practice. Most people, even comedians, don't decide one day they're not funny and now the next day they are. We practice looking for the humor until it becomes routine and automatic. And you can too.

That's it for today. Take care and enjoy your journey.
