Everyone is FREAKING out that the enemies of reproductive freedom installed onto our Supreme Court have decided to hear a Mississippi case that could end Roe v. Wade, the precedent that has protected legal abortion in this country for almost 50 YEARS! In this FBK Newsbreak, your Feminist Buzzkills interview Hillary Schneller, the lead attorney from the Center for Reproductive Rights who will be arguing against this case before the Supreme Court on December 1, 2021. In preparation for December 1st, we did an interview back in May with Hillary, aka THE person who could help teach us all what's at stake and what we can do to support Mississippi and protect our right to decisions about OUR BODIES.

The Mississippi Case

Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health will argued at SCOTUS on December 1, 2021

Hillary Schneller Introduction

Hillary Schneller is a senior staff attorney at the Center for Reproductive Rights (@reprorights) who will be the LEAD attorney challenging the Mississippi case at SCOTUS

Meaty Story:

Facts of Mississippi’s case breakdown by Hillary Schneller

2018 – Mississippi originally passes the 15-week ban

Explicit purpose of this ban – to provoke SCOTUS to take a case that would challenge Roe v. Wade which has protected legal abortion in the US since 1973

Immediately blocked by the lower court & 5th circuit court of appeals

June, 2021 – SCOTUS agrees to hear Mississippi case

What is at stake?

“The state chose to pass a law it knew was unconstitutional to endorse a decades-long campaign fueled by national interest groups to ask the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade” – US District Court Judge Carlton Reeves

If overturned, many states will follow Mississippi’s lead in successfully passing anti-abortion bans

10+ states have “trigger” bans in place which will end abortion within 24 hours as soon as Roe is overturned
