This podcast is recorded on the lands of the Ngunnawal and Ngambri People. We pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging and to any Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people listening.

Welcome to Episode 10 of F#@% them fish: ADHD for grownups. A big welcome to all our new listeners who have just found our octopus community and a massive hug to all our regular listeners... we love how many of you come back each week and share your stories with us. We love that we can be part of your experience xx

In this episode, we completely forget to introduce ourselves!! Just a reminder, we are definitely not professionals.

Halloween - it's not American! And the 'tricks' they used to do in England in the 80s... "it's just hooliganism!"

We said we would do a deep dive into the the Australian guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of ADHD. Turns out this is going to take a lot more than one episode, so we only look at part 1 - Identification (see the link to the summary below). We spend most of the episode talking about things around the guidelines, most importantly - how to read them! They are designed for clinicians so a level of assumed knowledge and critical thinking is important. To help with this, we've linked the factsheet for people with lived experience of ADHD at the bottom.

We talk a lot about our recent experience with school and our child - Trigger Warning - we do talk about suicidal thoughts. Parenting ADHD kids is really hard - would a flexible school structure help? What do you think? ADHD is a recognised disability and some people do find it debilitating. How much difference would it make to have funded education for parents and teachers?

It will surprise no one to hear that the guidelines acknowledge that women are often underdiagnosed, but that's not all. Have a listen to what else the identification guidelines say about women.

Sidequests:

  • Callie's accent - where exactly is is from? Hint: it's not The Midlands
  • Guy Fawkes - remember, remember, the 5th of November. Gunpowder, treason, and plot.
  • What is a Celt?
  • What is the collective noun for 'uterus'?
  • Hysteria in women...sound familiar? Lauchy thought a lobotomy was a what??
