We continue with our two-part series on the backpacking adventures of Mike and Kathy Derrick on the John Muir Trail in California. "Take only pictures. Leave only footprints" is a familiar phrase for many of us, yet have we stopped to examine what this really means in practice? Mike and Kathy illustrate the seven principles of "Leave No Trace" with examples from their recent hike, and even introduce "Beyond Leave No Trace," which extends environmental responsibility into a broader context.
