Are you truly choosing each day? Or are you recreating your past, or possibly someone else's past?
I went to a very large new years day party.* That's right, I said DAY party, not new years EVEN. I didn't even know it existed, so you might not be super surprised that it was my first time to an event like this. The friend I went with had gone many years in the past and having been there before I listened for guidance on what to wear and what to expect. I was told that this would be a burning man related event and that it would be "a lot". That it could be too much so I should be careful.
As the event went on I found there to be a lot of people in a lot of costumes with a lot of loud music, yet, nothing overwhelming for me. I've been well experienced in going to large festivals, big costume parties, and even a kink conference. If there's a chance for me to learn and grow I'll show up.
When I talked to my friend afterward about how I nervous I was based on the description of it being "a lot." It turned out that they hadn't been going to large events of this scale for over a year and half and ultimately they were worried it would be a lot for them.
This judgement got passed on to me, and I almost took it on as mine. Luckily, I'm well trained, so I choose to make it a new event that was just slightly different than others and found lots of great people and activities to enjoy.
When we're talking about the future it's important to paint it how we WANT IT TO BE. For ourselves and also for those that might be following our lead. How much easier would it have been for me if I was told "This event has lots of people, music, and activities, and because you've been to similar events it will be super easy for you to have a good time, and if there's any challenges we'll find ways to turn them into good times"
Ultimately it all became a good time. How would you like to choose your life to be? The options are literally infinite so choose something that delights you.
*This event was in SF, where vaccinations are required to attend events and even go to restaurants. Choices have consequences. My choices allow me to go to just about any activity I would like in the safest way currently known. Could there be other consequences? Possibly and I'll accept those and take responsibility without blaming others. Stay safe and respectful to your fellow humans who are just trying to figure this life thing out best they can.
