Today I speak with the beautiful Steph from SGR Holistic Occupational Therapy about how teachers can adopt a neuro-affirming approach in the classroom.

We discuss:

  • Regulation: Addressing misconceptions
  • The Zones of Regulation
  • Teaching children to advocate for what they need
  • Expected and Unexpected behaviours
  • How to develop neuro-affirming IEP’s in conjunction with health professionals
  • Social skills groups- Do they actually help neurodivergent children?
  • Where to go and how to broaden your knowledge on neuro-affirming practice
  • What is masking and why it is so detrimental? (This is SO relatable for EVERYONE)

Remember, one step in the right direction is positive. Exceptional teachers are lifelong learners who continue to upskill, learn new things and adapt their practice and approach. At the end of the day we are there for the children so I believe it's important to continue to learn how to best support them in order for them to succeed and thrive!
