This week I have the pleasure of bringing CFL Legend Anthony Calvillo onto the podcast.  For those who may not know, Anthony is a CFL Hall of Fame Quarterback, Grey Cup Champion and the all-time pro football passing yards leader.

For someone who has had such an incredible career, I was extremely interested in this interview to hear Anthony's stories of as he put it "hitting rock bottom" being cut from the pros, as well as many ups and downs through his college career.

What he attributed to his success in football was simple. It was a change in mindset.  Early in his career feeling like if he beat a player out for a position, they had nothing to offer him, whether or not they had more experience than he did.  This led to bad games, getting subbed out and ultimately getting cut.
However, getting an opportunity to play in Montreal allowed Anthony a fresh start.  Understanding that he had a championship level quarterback in front of him, he came in with the mindset of only wanting to learn.  As soon as he was able to humble himself and LEARN from those around him, he was able to change the entire trajectory of his career and become one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game of football.

The mindset he carried through the early parts of his career are common amongst many young athletes.  Feeling like if you are playing for the top level team in your area, or you are being looked at by teams at the next level that means that you have nothing more to learn.  Feeling like you are doing the right things and your career is on the right track.  Anthony does a great job in this interview of breaking down exactly why this is not the case.  Even if you are doing some things right, there is always someone out there that can help you.  There is always someone out there you can learn from.  Some of his best advice for young athletes today was to simply evaluate what success means to you.  Are you happy being the starter on your high school team? Or do you want to make it as a pro? If you have another step you want to take in your career, be humble and don't try to simply do it on your own.  Bring people in who can help you. Find coaches, mentors, etc. that can prepare you.  This is the way to change the trajectory of your career in the astonishing way that Anthony Calvillo did it.
