This week I have the pleasure of bringing Carlotta Edwards onto the show. Carlotta is a professional figure skater from small town BC.  Growing up in a town with no ice rink, she spent her childhood practicing skating moves on rollerblades and in her living room.  This is a prime example of an athlete building a career based off of the pure love of the sport.

One of my biggest takeaways from talking with Carly was her perspective on her career right from the beginning.  From early competitions and shows showing up to compete against herself.  Avoiding comparing what she could do to what other skaters in competition could do and simply performing for HERSELF and the love of the sport.  I think this is an incredible lesson for any athlete.  The minute you put your focus on what others are doing around you instead of what you are doing, you will start losing.  You lose the love of the sport, you lose the control over your situation.  Whatever situation you're in, focus on improving yourself and watch the success follow.

Moving from her early years to working for Disney On Ice, not looking at it as a job, but simply looking at it as an opportunity to continue doing what she loved.  Staying on the ice until midnight many nights with the attitude of "Why would I not be on the ice?" instead of feeling like she had to be there I think perfectly shows why she has been such a success through her career.  If you can take anything away from Carly's interview today I hope that you take away a new desire to take advantage of every opportunity your career puts in front of you. Even if it is not what you may have originally pictured, by taking advantage and putting everything you have into opportunities... amazing things happen.

The other thing I hope people take away from Carly's interview was her extreme deliberate practice. Having a goal every day, 3 goals every week and 5 big goals every month as well as constant reflection on her training, her practice and how she was accomplishing those goals showed a will and determination to create success in her career from day 1.  If you want to be a successful athlete, breaking things down the way she did is a great place to start.
