This week I have Belleville Senators Strength & Conditioning Coach Jeremy Benoit on the show. Jeremy and I discuss the day to day role of strength and conditioning in professional hockey, the importance of collaboration with the rest of the staff, as well as the importance of evolution in both training practices and athletes in their careers.
Jeremy and I also dig deep into the development of young athletes coming up, hoping to make a career in their sport. No matter what athlete you are right now, you are on one side of the gap. You are either one of the top players out there currently ahead of the gap, or you are on the other side trying to close the gap between you and the top players out there. Either way, if you are trying to make it to the next level in sport, ask yourself "what can I be doing right now to gain or close the gap?"
Another extremely important point that Jeremy makes is that scouts are not looking for players who "scored 120 points last season." Scouts are looking for players with the potential to GROW off of their great seasons.
What can you do to gain that gap yourself? One of the low hanging fruit that Jeremy and I discuss is training. Specifically, what you can do to make your training more deliberate. The more focused you are both on and off the ice, the more progress you will be able to make. We also talk about how to make sure that the strength coach you hire to help develop you in the off-seasons actually has your best interests in mind. Training for the sake of training does not build better athletes. Training for the sake of performing does. Tune in and learn from one of the pros of the industry!
